globes & thistles, just clears grape hyacinths\u2019 beaded<\/span><\/p>\n

flowers, smacks full into delphinium spears.\u00a0 Later<\/span><\/p>\n

she sleeps in piles of forget-me-nots.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nearby a horse grazes the Kentucky bluegrass between\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Daylilies & Icelandic poppies the color of scarlet ibises\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

or the spots on black widow bellies.\u00a0 Their petals fan out\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

like fly agaric that purrs in shade.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Second after second someone shows his child mountains,<\/span><\/p>\n

their caps pleated with white, their valleys humming\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

with harebell & buttercup. Cougars with kohl-rimmed<\/span><\/p>\n

eyes slink between oaks while painted turtles with sweet\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

potato stomachs bathe in sun-charged grass.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Each minute a child falls in love with river birch\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

octopus roots & clam shells scattered like tarnished\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

coins in a swelling stream.\u00a0 She may fall to her knees<\/span><\/p>\n

while embracing a burnished sky or furrowed storm\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

clouds or both.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every time we dive into landscape & break the surface<\/span><\/p>\n

with grass-stained knees & muddy elbows, every time\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

we gaze over heads to a red-tailed hawk\u2019s slow midday<\/span><\/p>\n

soar, every time we stand in a field & witness robins\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

worm-seeking hop,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

each time we brush the heads of balloon flowers\u2019 starry\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

tips with primate fingers, we become the magicians<\/span><\/p>\n

we seek\u2014ridged-capped, feather-robed,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
