Salt Kingdom, After the Fever<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Morning fractures across the flats:<\/span>
\n<\/span>amber poured into every hollow.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Reeds stand blackened and fragile,<\/span>
\n<\/span>their husks whispering to wind.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tide has withdrawn to a thin confession,<\/span>
\n<\/span>leaving salt crusted like frost<\/span>
\n<\/span>along the shore\u2019s tired lip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gulls tilt on invisible currents,<\/span>
\n<\/span>their cries thinning into distance.<\/span>
\n<\/span>My bare feet sink:<\/span>
\n<\/span>sand tasting faintly of rust and old rain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once we came here fevered,<\/span>
\n<\/span>our shadows longer than our patience.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Salt stiffened in your hair<\/span>
\n<\/span>like a crown you did not ask to wear.<\/span><\/p>\n

We believed the water would keep us:<\/span>
\n<\/span>that its pulse could outlast our own.<\/span>
\n<\/span>But brine remembers only brine.<\/span>
\n<\/span>It keeps no names.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I stand at the seam:<\/span>
\n<\/span>sand dissolving into salt,<\/span>
\n<\/span>salt dissolving into air –<\/span>
\n<\/span>each grain a ledger of departure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, something returns.<\/span>
\n<\/span>A shimmer along the horizon.<\/span>
\n<\/span>A breathing under the crust.<\/span><\/p>\n

The body, salted and unkinged,<\/span>
\n<\/span>listens for the tide<\/span>
