Within two strides<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a wasp caught herself between my toes, weaving her needle<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in and out, through the layer of skin, up and about. And so,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">although my mother\u2019s wings would\u2019ve taken her off<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to better things, still she balanced me atop her leg, humming<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a melody, and once again bouncing that knee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">She poked and strung thick thread, worn fingers pricking<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">one another, missing the fabric as \u2018<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Shhhh\u2019<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">she begged. In a<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">moment of calm, her hands finally began guiding the<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">needle home, but then<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">twisting and shouting, I broke her stitch and shook<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the needle from her fingertips. Hurling her figure<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">against the bulkhead door, her world ceased<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">because mine carried on once more<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I let my shoes spill off the frame of my feet and withbaby steps, took to the green carpet.
