There was a year in Peru
\nwhen the sky learned to burn.<\/p>\n
Not a metaphor\u2014
\nliteral fire
\nraining down in bursts,
\nbank fronts blown open,
\nbuses reduced to metal ribs,
\nwhole avenues lit
\nin the wrong kind of brightness.<\/p>\n
Sendero Luminoso
\nmade the city tremble,
\nbut so did the government
\nthat claimed to defend it\u2014
\nboth sides hungry
\nfor proof of power,
\nboth sides convinced
\nthe dead were acceptable
\nas long as they belonged
\nto someone else.<\/p>\n
And always,
\nthe casualties were Indigenous.<\/p>\n
Ayacucho first,
\nthen the surrounding villages\u2014
\nplaces the capital
\ntreated like distant cousins
\nit never wanted to claim.<\/p>\n
Entire communities
\ncaught in the crossfire,
\nused as warnings,
\nas examples,
\nas body counts
\nto tally the success
\nof one side or the other<\/p>\n
People disappeared\u2014
\nnot metaphorically,
\nbut literally,
\npulled from beds,
\nfrom fields,
\nfrom doorways,
\nclaimed by whichever hand
\nreached them first.<\/p>\n
Children learned to distinguish
\nthe sound of explosives
\nfrom thunder.
\nMothers learned
\nwhich direction to run
\nwhen the shouting started.
\nFathers dug graves
\nwith no names
\nbecause naming itself
\nhad become dangerous.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile,
\nLima watched the mountains burn
\nfrom a distance,
\npretending those flames
\nwere happening
\nin another country.<\/p>\n
Pretending Indigenous lives
\nwere expendable,
\ninterchangeable,
\nforgettable.<\/p>\n
But fire has a way
\nof teaching the truth\u2014
\nit spreads,
\nit stains,
\nit remembers.<\/p>\n
Even now,
\ndecades later,
\nthe country pretends
\nthe sky healed.<\/p>\n
But some nights,
\nwhen the air feels too still,
\nI can hear the echo
\nof a war
\nthat devoured its poorest
\nfirst,
\nits Indigenous
\nmost thoroughly,
\nits silence
\nmost completely.<\/p>\n
The year the sky learned to burn
\nwas the year Peru
\nshowed its true face.<\/p>\n
And no distance,
\nno border,
\nno new beginning
\ncould keep the ember
\nfrom traveling
\ninto the next generation.<\/p>\n
