{"id":2046,"date":"2026-05-07T12:27:02","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T17:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sagebrushreview.org\/wordpress\/?p=2046"},"modified":"2026-05-07T12:39:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T17:39:19","slug":"the-year-the-sky-learned-to-burn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sagebrushreview.org\/wordpress\/2026\/05\/the-year-the-sky-learned-to-burn\/","title":{"rendered":"The Year the Sky Learned to Burn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a year in Peru<br \/>\nwhen the sky learned to burn.<\/p>\n<p>Not a metaphor\u2014<br \/>\nliteral fire<br \/>\nraining down in bursts,<br \/>\nbank fronts blown open,<br \/>\nbuses reduced to metal ribs,<br \/>\nwhole avenues lit<br \/>\nin the wrong kind of brightness.<\/p>\n<p>Sendero Luminoso<br \/>\nmade the city tremble,<br \/>\nbut so did the government<br \/>\nthat claimed to defend it\u2014<br \/>\nboth sides hungry<br \/>\nfor proof of power,<br \/>\nboth sides convinced<br \/>\nthe dead were acceptable<br \/>\nas long as they belonged<br \/>\nto someone else.<\/p>\n<p>And always,<br \/>\nthe casualties were Indigenous.<\/p>\n<p>Ayacucho first,<br \/>\nthen the surrounding villages\u2014<br \/>\nplaces the capital<br \/>\ntreated like distant cousins<br \/>\nit never wanted to claim.<\/p>\n<p>Entire communities<br \/>\ncaught in the crossfire,<br \/>\nused as warnings,<br \/>\nas examples,<br \/>\nas body counts<br \/>\nto tally the success<br \/>\nof one side or the other<\/p>\n<p>People disappeared\u2014<br \/>\nnot metaphorically,<br \/>\nbut literally,<br \/>\npulled from beds,<br \/>\nfrom fields,<br \/>\nfrom doorways,<br \/>\nclaimed by whichever hand<br \/>\nreached them first.<\/p>\n<p>Children learned to distinguish<br \/>\nthe sound of explosives<br \/>\nfrom thunder.<br \/>\nMothers learned<br \/>\nwhich direction to run<br \/>\nwhen the shouting started.<br \/>\nFathers dug graves<br \/>\nwith no names<br \/>\nbecause naming itself<br \/>\nhad become dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,<br \/>\nLima watched the mountains burn<br \/>\nfrom a distance,<br \/>\npretending those flames<br \/>\nwere happening<br \/>\nin another country.<\/p>\n<p>Pretending Indigenous lives<br \/>\nwere expendable,<br \/>\ninterchangeable,<br \/>\nforgettable.<\/p>\n<p>But fire has a way<br \/>\nof teaching the truth\u2014<br \/>\nit spreads,<br \/>\nit stains,<br \/>\nit remembers.<\/p>\n<p>Even now,<br \/>\ndecades later,<br \/>\nthe country pretends<br \/>\nthe sky healed.<\/p>\n<p>But some nights,<br \/>\nwhen the air feels too still,<br \/>\nI can hear the echo<br \/>\nof a war<br \/>\nthat devoured its poorest<br \/>\nfirst,<br \/>\nits Indigenous<br \/>\nmost thoroughly,<br \/>\nits silence<br \/>\nmost completely.<\/p>\n<p>The year the sky learned to burn<br \/>\nwas the year Peru<br \/>\nshowed its true face.<\/p>\n<p>And no distance,<br \/>\nno border,<br \/>\nno new beginning<br \/>\ncould keep the ember<br \/>\nfrom traveling<br \/>\ninto the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>Some fires<br \/>\nare inherited.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a year in Peru when the sky learned to burn.
