{"id":2104,"date":"2026-05-20T10:56:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T15:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sagebrushreview.org\/wordpress\/?p=2104"},"modified":"2026-05-20T10:56:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T15:56:31","slug":"lantern-at-the-rim-of-dusk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sagebrushreview.org\/wordpress\/2026\/05\/lantern-at-the-rim-of-dusk\/","title":{"rendered":"Lantern at the Rim of Dusk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The sun goes down like a sealed wound:<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">scarlet pressed into the canyoned sky.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Tumbleweed clings to the slope,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">its dry ribs rasping in wind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">You carry the lantern low.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Its flame trembles:<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a small animal cupped in glass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">We walk the ridge where dust remembers<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">every passing boot,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">every leaving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Cedar lifts its dark perfume<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">into the cooling air.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">A whippoorwill threads its single note<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">through the widening blue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The lantern throws a breathing circle<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at our feet.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Light loosens stones from shadow,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">warms the knuckles of earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Beyond it, night assembles:<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">silver syllables in tall grass,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the soft grammar of distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">We do not speak.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">We let the dark pronounce us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Somewhere beyond the rim,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">morning is already gathering<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">its pale, deliberate fire.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sun goes down like a sealed wound:scarlet pressed into the canyoned sky.Tumbleweed clings to the slope,its dry ribs rasping in wind.
