What I was doing was obvious.<\/span><\/p>\n

When isolation and the fear of death<\/span><\/p>\n

got out of hand, play-pieces<\/span><\/p>\n

from culture filled<\/span><\/p>\n

my salon\/playroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

(It\u2019s more like Go than chess:<\/span><\/p>\n

there are a lot of pieces.)<\/span><\/p>\n

When I felt more mellow, I trotted out<\/span><\/p>\n

the prophetic voice, trying to build<\/span><\/p>\n

community from liberal depression.<\/span><\/p>\n

I specialized in narrative, which critics loathe,<\/span><\/p>\n

fighting the temptation<\/span><\/p>\n

to be a great aphorist. My<\/span><\/p>\n

emotions yellowed in the files<\/span><\/p>\n

of ancient analytic styles,<\/span><\/p>\n

and what I didn\u2019t say was said by others:<\/span><\/p>\n

Of these cities will remain<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

only the wind that blew through them<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
