Museum of Sound

What noises should we save

in the museum of historic sounds?

The beautiful calls of song birds

preserved before extinction?

The burbling of gushing streams

before the silencing of drought?

The whispering of rustling leaves

before the susurration ceases?

Yet good vibrations will long abide

in our changing lives. Record instead

experiences that shortly will be lost:

the motor mower on a Sunday morning;

a diesel truck straining with its load;

combustion engines of peak-hour traffic;

the noises powered by fossil fuels

that will soon depart this world.
